About Douglas Laing & Co
Based in Glasgow since 1948, Douglas Laing & Co. was founded by Fred Douglas Laing and later developed by his sons, Fred Jr. and Stuart. Following a family reorganization, Stuart founded Hunter Laing & Co., while Fred Jr. continued leading the original company alongside his daughter, Cara. Their portfolio includes well-known labels such as Big Peat, Rock Island, and Timorous Beastie.
Scallywag Alberta Edition
Launched in 2013, Scallywag was created as the Speyside counterpart to Big Peat, showcasing a rich, sherry-driven style. Developed by Cara Laing as her first project in the family business, it brings together carefully selected Speyside single malts.
This Alberta Edition features a blend of malts including Mortlach, Macallan, and Glenrothes, along with a few undisclosed distilleries. Fully composed of Speyside single malts, it is matured in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, delivering depth, sweetness, and spice.
The Douglas Laing family has long been associated with Wire Fox Terriers. The Scallywag label features Binx (#7), whose missing tooth is true to the real dog.
Why Whisky enthusiasts should pay attention
Scallywag stands apart as a 100% Speyside blended malt built around a rich sherry-cask profile, bringing together respected distilleries like Mortlach, Macallan, and Glenrothes. Created as the sherried counterpart to Big Peat and led by Cara Laing as her first project, it represents both heritage and a fresh generation within Douglas Laing. This Alberta Edition adds an extra layer of appeal, offering a market-specific release that few outside the province will encounter, making it a distinctive and collectible dram for lovers of sherried whisky.
